Australian-made off grid: what's made here, what's engineered here, and why it matters when something goes wrong.

"Australian-made" on a battery or an inverter can mean designed and built in a Victorian factory, or engineered here and manufactured offshore, or an Australian company with an Australian warranty and imported everything. All three can be good gear. The difference shows up ten years in, on a property a long way from anywhere, when a battery module fails and someone has to answer the phone. Here's who makes what, where, how Australian it really is, and how we weigh it in a design.

Why it matters off grid

The phone call, ten years in

An off-grid system is the only power a property has. When a module in the bank fails in year eight, what matters is whether the company that made it still exists, still supports that model, and still has someone in your time zone who can read the fault log. Imported gear from a serious manufacturer passes that test — Victron has for us for more than a decade. Gear from a brand that came and went doesn't, and off grid there is a specific version of that failure worth knowing about.

Batteries in Australia are listed on the Clean Energy Council's approved products list, and listings lapse. We've seen manufacturers never relist an older battery, which leaves the owner unable to add matching modules to a bank they own. The fix is design: build on a platform that lets a second battery brand sit beside the first — Victron does this well — so nobody's bank is stranded by a paperwork decision in another country. Local manufacture is one answer to the same worry. It is not the only one, and it is never the first question we ask about a property.

One honest line under all of them: lithium cells are almost always imported, whoever assembles the pack. What's Australian is the engineering, the battery management, the assembly and testing, and the support. That's a lot — it's the part that fails and the part that answers the phone — and it's worth calling by its right name.

Four things that make these interesting off grid

Zenaji · lithium titanate

22,000 cycles and a 20-year warranty

Zenaji's Aeon uses lithium-titanate chemistry, which trades energy density for lifespan and temperature tolerance: 100% depth of discharge, a 22,000-cycle warranty over 20 years, and an operating range Zenaji rates from −40 to 60 °C — with 5 to 35 °C the recommended band, and the warranty reduced for regular running outside it. Each 48 V module holds 1.93 kWh and delivers about 2.4 kW continuous, so a bank is many modules. Zenaji lists Victron and Selectronic among the compatible inverters — the two platforms we design with most for hard-load properties.

Vaulta · Brisbane

Built to be opened and fixed

Most battery packs are sealed: a failed cell group means a failed module. Vaulta's design is the opposite — a non-welded architecture in which every component is individually repairable, so a technician opens the pack, replaces what failed at cell level, and puts it back into service. For an off-grid bank meant to last twenty years, repairability is a kind of warranty in itself. 48 V LFP packs from a 5.12 kWh module to a 14.36 kWh 19-inch rack unit, with a ten-year warranty.

PowerPlus · honest labels

Read the model number

PowerPlus Energy makes some modules in Melbourne — the LiFe4838P — and describes its Eco4847P as majority Australian content, while its LiFe4851 datasheet says plainly "Manufactured in China. Engineered, tested and assured in Australia." We respect a maker that puts that on the sheet. The point for you: "Australian-made" is decided model by model, and we tell you which model is in your design and what its label says.

One factory, start to finish

RedEarth's line is that all of its products are designed, engineered, assembled and tested at its own factory in Brisbane, with a ten-year warranty across the range, and it positions BlackMax as its off-grid system. For a Northern Rivers or South East Queensland property that puts the people who built the battery a drive away, not a flight — which is exactly the phone call this page is about.

How we weigh it

Made here is an input, not the answer

A design starts with the property — the loads, the distances, the sun, the phase supply — and ends with the gear. Where the gear is made enters the decision alongside chemistry, cycle life, compatibility with the inverter, the maker's track record and, yes, the price. Sometimes an Australian battery wins on merit: a bank that has to last twenty years in a well-ventilated shed is a Zenaji conversation. Sometimes an imported battery on a platform with a decade of support behind it wins, and we say so. We don't hold stock of either, so nothing in a warehouse tips the choice.

What we won't do is sell "Australian-made" as a slogan. If a module in your design is made in Melbourne, we'll tell you. If it's engineered in Melbourne and built offshore, we'll tell you that too, in the maker's own words. You're making a twenty-year decision; you deserve the label read straight.

Which off-grid inverters are made in Australia?

Selectronic's SP PRO Series 2i, designed and manufactured in Wantirna South, Victoria, is the Australian-made off-grid inverter. Selectronic describes itself as Australian owned, designed, manufactured and supported. Most other inverters we design with are imported — Victron from a Netherlands-based company, Deye and Sigenergy from China.

Which solar batteries are made in Australia?

Zenaji builds its Aeon lithium-titanate modules in Mentone, Victoria. Vaulta designs and assembles repairable LFP packs in Brisbane, and RedEarth designs, engineers, assembles and tests its Troppo and BlackMax systems at its Brisbane factory. PowerPlus Energy in Scoresby, Victoria, makes some modules locally and has others manufactured in China and engineered and tested in Australia — it varies by model, and PowerPlus says so on the datasheet.

Are the battery cells themselves Australian?

Almost never. Lithium cells are imported by nearly every pack maker, here and overseas. What's Australian in an Australian-made battery is the pack engineering, the battery management system, the assembly, the testing and the support — which is the part that fails and the part that answers the phone.

Do Australian-made batteries work with Victron and Selectronic?

Zenaji lists both Victron and Selectronic among its compatible inverters. Vaulta and PowerPlus are 48 V LFP packs with battery communications (Vaulta names Victron and Deye among its integrations) and pair with a range of inverters; RedEarth's pairing is confirmed with RedEarth per model. We confirm the exact pairing against the inverter maker's compatibility list before anything is quoted.

Are Australian-made batteries CEC approved?

Approval is by model and listings change, so we check the Clean Energy Council's approved products list for the exact model at design time rather than quoting a brand-wide answer. It matters for rebates and for some installers' accreditation conditions, and we'll tell you where each component in your design stands.

Does Australian-made cost more?

Often, yes, module for module. What the extra buys is local engineering, local warranty handling and a phone that rings in your time zone, and in some cases a chemistry — like Zenaji's lithium titanate — with a far longer cycle life. Whether that's the right trade is a property-by-property decision, and the design lays it out without a thumb on the scale.
