Sodium batteries,
installed. Not a catalogue.
Most of what ranks for “sodium battery Australia” is a webshop flogging boxes on pallets. We're installers. When sodium-ion is the right chemistry for your property, we design the system around it, install it, and answer the phone afterwards — Kempsey to the Gold Coast.
Straight answers · August 2026Sodium-ion batteries in Australia
Sodium-ion is the first genuinely new home-storage chemistry in a decade. It swaps lithium for sodium — abundant as table salt, mined nowhere fragile — and its temperament differs in ways that matter on a real property: it keeps charging in cold that makes lithium hesitate, its thermal behaviour stays notably calm under abuse, and a sodium pack can sit at zero volts in a shed for months without damage.
The other side of the ledger, stated just as plainly: sodium stores fewer kilowatt-hours per kilogram, so packs run bulkier for the same capacity, and the list of certified residential products in Australia is still short. Both sides go into our sizing. We sell the system that fits, not the chemistry of the month.
Who a sodium battery install suits
Off-grid huts, sheds & retreats
Zero-volt storage through the empty months, generator charge on frosty mornings, no grid to lean on. Sodium's temperament was made for the stand-alone life.
Cold-country properties
Tablelands, hinterland valleys and frost pockets where winter mornings sit below the comfort zone of most lithium packs. Sodium charges on through it.
Workshops & commercial sites
Where floor space costs less than downtime, sodium's cycle life and thermal stability read like an engineering spec, not a marketing line.
Chemistry-first buyers
People who want the calmest thermal behaviour available near their home and family, and who make decisions on the chemistry, not the discount.
The rebate, stated plainly
As of August 2026 the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount applies to batteries on the Clean Energy Council's approved-product list — and that list is lithium chemistry today. No sodium pack currently qualifies. If the discount decides your budget, lithium is the honest answer and we'll quote it gladly. Sodium is for when the chemistry itself is the point. Full scheme facts on our rebates page.
Sodium vs lithium home battery
| What matters | Sodium-ion | Lithium (LFP) |
|---|---|---|
| Cold weather | Charges happily in sub-zero cold | Charging restricted near and below freezing |
| Thermal behaviour | Notably calm under abuse | Very good in LFP form, still lithium |
| Size for the same storage | Bulkier — more cabinet per kilowatt-hour | Compact, dense, wall-friendly |
| Storage & transport | Sits safely at zero volts for months | Prefers charge maintenance in storage |
| Federal battery discount | Not eligible today (no approved sodium packs) | Eligible on approved products |
| Installed price direction | Falling as production scales | Mature, currently the sharper figure |
| Certified home products in Australia | A short list, growing | A long, established list |
Neither column wins outright — that's the point. The load profile, the site and the winter pick the chemistry. Anyone who leads with the pack before asking about your loads is selling stock, not engineering.
Sodium battery off grid
Off-grid is where sodium's temperament earns its keep. Winter mornings in the hinterland start well below the charging comfort zone of most lithium packs — and a stand-alone system charges when the sun and the generator say so, not when the chemistry feels ready. A pack that accepts charge on a frosty morning, tolerates deep cycling, and stores safely at zero volts through an empty season is a pack built for stand-alone life.
It gets the same engineering as every off-grid build we do: loads counted honestly, winter assumed rather than hoped away, generator integrated, and fifteen years of stand-alone design behind the sizing.

How we design sodium
Site first, loads second, hybrid or off-grid third — then the pack that fits. Tell us about the property; if sodium is the right call, the quote says so with the working shown. If it isn't, the quote says that too, and you'll know exactly why.

Sodium battery questions, answered
Is a sodium battery cheaper than lithium in Australia?
At the raw-material level sodium promises a lower cost curve, and scaling production keeps pushing it down. Installed in an Australian home today, a comparable lithium system usually lands cheaper per stored kilowatt-hour — manufacturing scale and the federal discount see to that. Sodium wins on different grounds: cold performance, thermal stability, storage tolerance and cycle life. An honest quote shows both.
Can I get the federal battery rebate on sodium?
No — not today. The discount runs on the Clean Energy Council's approved-product list, which is lithium chemistry as of August 2026. We state that up front so nobody discovers it at contract time.
Do you install sodium-ion batteries near Tweed, Gold Coast or Lismore?
Yes. We're headquartered in Lismore and install across the Northern Rivers, Tweed, Gold Coast and Mid North Coast from Kempsey up, with accredited local installers on the ground. Start with the form above or call 0483 927 257.
Sodium vs lithium for off-grid?
Density favours lithium: fewer cabinets for the same stored energy. Temperament favours sodium: sub-zero charging, calm thermal behaviour, zero-volt storage through empty seasons. On cold-climate or intermittently occupied sites, sodium is often the stronger engineering answer; on space-tight builds, lithium holds the edge. We size both and show the working.
