What is Localvolts?
Localvolts is an electricity retailer with a peer-to-peer marketplace and access to wholesale electricity prices. You can offer to buy from other participants, sell your surplus energy, and set your buy preferences and sell offers.
Setting a price does not guarantee a trade. When energy is not matched in the peer-to-peer market, the unmatched amount is bought or sold at the wholesale spot price. Localvolts explains the process in its marketplace guide.
This is for grid-connected properties. A fully off-grid home cannot trade electricity through the grid.
Why it interests The Off Grid Shop
We like giving households and businesses more say in how they buy and sell energy. Peer-to-peer trading creates an opportunity to connect people with surplus solar with people who can use energy at that time.
Our approach starts with everyday energy use: run useful loads when energy is available, protect the home’s battery reserve and compare the full cost of buying and selling. We don’t build the case around hoping for a large price spike.
Matching is a commercial arrangement through the electricity market. It does not create a private cable between two properties or remove the grid from the transaction.
Who controls the solar and batteries?
Localvolts says it does not monitor or control your devices. You can use equipment schedules, arrange compatible automation or work with a provider who manages it. Its data service provides market and customer-specific information that can support integrations.
A starting routine might use daytime solar to charge the battery, then use stored energy at home in the evening. The settings depend on your usage, reserve, tariffs and equipment. A fixed schedule is not automatically the lowest-cost choice every day.
Localvolts can renew market offers and buying preferences automatically. That is separate from instructing your inverter to charge or discharge.
How is that different from Amber SmartShift?
Amber SmartShift provides battery automation using wholesale prices for supported systems. Check the current compatibility list for your equipment.
With Localvolts, the device-control arrangement is something you organise separately. The useful comparison is how much control you want, who will manage the equipment, and what the complete arrangement costs.
Compare the whole bill
Wholesale prices vary. Low prices at one time do not guarantee low prices later, and negative export prices can mean paying to export. Consider network charges, service fees and other applicable costs alongside the energy price.
Review the current Localvolts fees and operating terms before switching. Compare them with your electricity use and export patterns, not a single attractive trading period.
Localvolts currently lists ACT, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania as service areas. Confirm availability for your property during registration.
