Victron Energy · Energy Storage System

Victron ESS in Australia: keep the wire, run the house from storage.

An ESS keeps the grid connection and uses the battery to carry the house, cover outages, and time-shift solar. Victron's version is a kit of parts — inverter-charger, GX, VRM, optional Dynamic ESS — sized to the property. The figures below are Victron's, attributed. The design still picks whether ESS, hybrid, or stand-alone is the right call.

ESS, hybrid, off-grid — the difference

ESS

Grid stays. Battery does the work.

The inverter-charger sits between the grid and the loads. Solar fills the battery. The house draws from storage first. On a blackout the system islands and the panels keep working — Victron's own home-battery page states that existing solar continues, unlike a grid-tied inverter that shuts down.

Hybrid cabinet

Same job, sealed box

Sigenergy, Deye and EcoFlow do the grid-connected storage job as an all-in-one. That is often the right drawing for a simple house. Victron ESS is the version that stays a kit of parts when the site will not fit a single cabinet. See what we install.

Off-grid

No wire in the drawing

Same Victron parts, no grid. Generator integration, winter sizing, a design that assumes the network is gone. That page is /victron. ESS is the grid-connected chapter of the same kit.

The pick

The property names it

A working connection and a daily supply charge the owner wants to ignore: ESS conversation. A rural block with a dear connection quote, or an owner who wants the poles gone: stand-alone conversation. We write the one that fits.

Stats from Victron, not a ranking

The numbers below come from Victron Energy's home-battery and Dynamic ESS pages, checked 6 September 2026. They are manufacturer figures. They are not a promise for an Australian roof, and they are not a claim that this shop ranks first at anything.

ClaimVictron's wordingHow we treat it
Solar usage30–40% higher solar usage than without a Victron ESSRepeated as their figure. The design still sizes the array to the loads.
Dynamic ESS licenceIncluded free with every Victron ESSNo extra Victron software fee. Setup time is still a design line.
Price checksCurrent rates every quarter-hour or hourOnly useful on a tariff that actually moves.
Inputs to the algorithmPrices, solar generation at the location, expected consumptionVictron's 2024 Dynamic ESS note also names a four-week use history.
Software floorVenus OS v3.30 and later, on a GX deviceThe GX is in the drawing. Nucleo GX is one option.
SubscriptionsNo mandatory contracts; software is free to useMatches how we already run VRM on off-grid Victron.
Outage behaviourSwitches to battery; existing solar keeps workingThe backup boundary is still drawn per property.
Peak shavingBattery covers demand spikes so the connection stays as-isUseful on a tight service fuse. Confirmed on the design.
Dynamic ESS

An optimiser, not a personality

Dynamic ESS plans the day: charge when the tariff is low or the sun is coming, discharge when the house would otherwise buy peak power. Victron describes two modes in its Dynamic ESS manual — Green, which keeps surplus solar for the house, and Trade, which sells surplus and uses the battery for tariff moves. Switching between them is a setting, not a new inverter.

On an Australian site that only matters if the retailer and the meter give the algorithm a price it can read. A flat retail rate leaves little for it to do. A time-of-use or dynamic contract is the case where we turn it on and show the owner the VRM plan. We do not invent a saving. The figure on the design is the one we can defend.

From the design desk

Chosen on merit, not habit

A Victron ESS is one answer among several. Fifteen years on the blue gear is a real, specific fact — it is not a reason to draw Victron on a property that wants a neat cabinet. If Sigenergy or Deye fits the house better, the design says that. The Victron hub covers stand-alone builds, the rack inverters and the 20 kW MultiPlus.

Is a Victron ESS the right drawing?

Tell us the tariff, the roof, the loads that stay on in a blackout, and whether the connection is staying. If Dynamic ESS has something to work with, the design shows the meter and the GX. If an all-in-one cabinet or a full off-grid system fits better, the design says that instead.

Victron ESS questions, answered

What is a Victron ESS?

ESS means Energy Storage System. A Victron ESS keeps the grid connection and uses a battery to run the house, cover outages, and time-shift solar. It is a kit of parts — inverter-charger, GX device, VRM, storage — rather than a sealed cabinet. Off-grid Victron is the same platform with no grid in the drawing.

What is Victron Dynamic ESS?

Dynamic ESS is Victron's optimiser for grid-connected systems. Victron states it is included free with every ESS. It plans charge and discharge from three inputs: the tariff in front of it, a solar forecast for the site, and a history of how the property uses power. Victron's software release notes place it on Venus OS v3.30 and later, set up on the GX or through VRM.

Does Dynamic ESS work in Australia?

An ESS itself — self-consumption and backup — runs on an Australian grid connection. Dynamic ESS earns its keep on a time-of-use or dynamic tariff with a meter the algorithm can read. On a flat retail rate it is less interesting, and the design says so. Whether a given retailer and meter make it worth turning on is a property-level check, not a brochure line.

What figure does Victron publish for solar usage?

Victron's home-battery page publishes a 30 to 40 percent higher solar usage figure for a Victron ESS versus a system without one. That is their number, on their site, for their algorithm. The Off Grid Shop repeats it as a manufacturer figure, not as a promise for your roof.

Victron ESS or a full off-grid system?

ESS keeps the wire. Off-grid cuts it. A property with a working connection and a daily supply charge it wants to ignore is an ESS conversation. A rural block with a dear connection quote, or an owner who wants the poles gone, is a stand-alone conversation. The design names which one, with the working shown.

Do you still install Victron off-grid systems?

Yes. The Off Grid Shop has been a Victron dealer for more than ten years and still designs stand-alone Victron systems whenever the property calls for that platform. ESS is the grid-connected chapter of the same kit. The hub page is /victron.
