The short version

A paddock machine that plugs in

Five years ago an “electric buggy” often meant a 48V golf cart with a lift kit. Today you can buy proper 4WD electric side-by-sides with 100 km+ of manufacturer-claimed range, towing in the same ballpark as petrol machines, and onboard 240V outlets for tools at the far end of the paddock.

This guide covers battery voltage, solar charging (with real numbers), onboard power, AU-available models, electric dirt bikes, running costs, and how to match a machine to the job. Prices are indicative AUD as of mid-September 2026 — dealers vary, and promos move.

The question that comes up most

48V vs 72V: what battery voltage actually means

Think of voltage like water pressure in a hose. Pack voltage is the pressure. Higher pressure generally spins the motor faster and delivers the same power with less current — cooler wiring, cooler controller, less heat under load.

48V

Utility / golf-cart class

Traditional utility class. Proven parts, gentler on batteries, often cheaper. Many sit around 25–40 km/h. Fine for paddock work.

72V

Property taxi pace

Noticeably quicker on property runs — often 50–80 km/h depending on the model. Useful when the machine is a taxi between house, sheds and back paddocks, or when you haul under load.

96V+

Performance / bike class

Performance / bike territory when speed is the priority. Voltage is the spec that sets the ceiling.

Mike’s owned view: He runs both a 48V and a 72V. For everyday farm work at sensible speeds, the gap is smaller than the brochures imply. Low-speed torque and hill manners are similar. The 72V earns its keep on sustained higher-speed runs and heavier loads — same job with fewer amps, so it runs cooler. He still likes 48V when a simple roof-solar accessory path matters.

Rule of thumb (opinion, not a ranking): paddock tool → 48V is often enough. Property taxi covering real distance → 72V or higher-voltage class.

Charging

Can you charge an electric UTV from solar?

Yes — usually by plugging into the property system, not by living off a roof panel.

Roof panel math (illustrative AU real-world)

A typical UTV pack sits somewhere around 10–30 kWh. A panel that sensibly fits on a buggy roof is often 200–400 W.

In typical Australian conditions (roughly 3.5–5 kWh per kW per day, after real-world losses and awkward angles):

  • 200 W0.7–1.0 kWh/day
  • 400 W1.4–2.0 kWh/day

That is useful top-up for a fridge or portable station. It is not a full traction recharge strategy for a 10–30 kWh pack. Older marketing that treated 400 W as ~2.4 kWh/day assumed near-perfect sun hours with zero losses — treat that as optimistic, not a planning figure.

CAN-bus and “solar on the traction pack”

Some packs talk over CAN-bus. Documented solar charging of the traction battery gets complicated or unsupported. Even on simpler 48V setups, a high-voltage panel string for solar charge is fiddly.

Practical path for most owners: plug-in charge from the house solar / hybrid system (or a generator) during daylight. Most machines refill from a standard 240V outlet in roughly 4–9 hours, which a sized property system handles on a sunny day.

How Mike uses solar on the buggy now

After moving to a CAN-bus battery, the roof panel is less about topping the drive pack and more about an EcoFlow (or similar) in the tray — fridge, tools, paddock-day power. That is a better job for a few hundred watts of panel than babysitting a 20 kWh traction battery.

Onboard 240V power

Several newer lithium UTVs offer an onboard inverter or vehicle-to-load (V2L) output — standard outlets on the vehicle for a welder, grinder, saw or compressor at the far fence line. Useful on off-grid blocks. Confirm whether the discharge gun / V2L kit is included or sold separately (CFMOTO’s U6 EV is a common example of the accessory path).

Manufacturer claims include: 35 kW PMSM, 74 Nm, 0–60 km/h under 6 seconds, top speed over 80 km/h, tow 800 kg, cargo tray 250 kg. Range up to 110 km at constant 30–40 km/h in ideal 20–25°C conditions — not a paddock-load guarantee.

V2L: up to 220 V / 3.3 kW — the discharge gun is often sold separately. Charge ~6.5 h 0–100% on a 15 A setup (15 A charger often separate); ~10 h on the supplied 8 A. Warranty: 2-year vehicle / 5-year unlimited-km battery (manufacturer terms).

Claims commonly listed: 110 hp peak; battery options 14.9 kWh (Premium, roughly ~70 km) and 29.8 kWh (Ultimate, marketing up to ~120 km); payload 680 kg; tow 1,134 kg; ground clearance ~35.5 cm.

AU charging: Type 2 EVSE for a standard AU wall outlet — write that for Australian buyers. US materials mention J1772 public stations; that is not the AU wall story.

Gritline Tuatara (eTuatara) — from $36,550 + GST & freight

Listed from $36,550 + GST & freight (AUD) — not a ride-away figure. Options include 12 kWh or 21 kWh LiFePO4, manufacturer range up to ~170 km, charge roughly 4–9 h depending on pack and charger.

Origin: NZ-designed, China-built, sold in Australia via Gritline (Kelso NSW distributor). Not Australian-made.

John Deere Gator TE 4x2 Electric

Quiet 48V workhorse. AU listings point to eight Trojan T-105 deep-cycle batteries, onboard charger, cargo box ~460 L, top speed roughly ~20–24 km/h, and AU tray capacity ~227 kg.

Do not treat the US/global 408 kg “payload” figure as the AU tray rating — that number is a different packaging of people + cargo on overseas pages.

Budget golf-cart / light buggy class (~$11k–$14k AUD)

Entry AU examples (indicative, freight often extra):

These are low-20s km/h class machines for flat ground, resorts and short people-movers. They are not a substitute for a proper UTV on rough terrain. Prefer named AU models over vague “Kandi America” USD list pages.

When a full UTV is more machine than the job, an electric motorcycle stays light, quiet and cheap to charge.

Running costs

Charge from your own solar and the “fuel” cost collapses to wear on the array and batteries you already own. Even from the grid, a full charge on a ~15 kWh pack is a few dollars versus a jerry can of petrol.

Maintenance is mostly tyres, brakes and inspections — no oil changes, no fuel system sitting over winter. Polaris estimates ~70% lower scheduled maintenance versus similar petrol UTVs over about five years — that is a manufacturer estimate, not an independent Australian fleet study.
