Lithium vs AGM,
for an off-grid house.
Lithium vs AGM is a question about how the house uses power. AGM is a sealed lead-acid battery (absorbent glass mat — the acid sits in a glass mat, so the case stays closed). Lithium is the usual fit when the bank cycles most days. Neither one wins a list.
Designed in Lismore · installed by accredited localsWhat actually differs
| Lithium | AGM | |
|---|---|---|
| Daily cycling | Built to be drawn down and refilled most days | Wears when it is cycled hard every day |
| Usable share | A larger share of the nameplate is available each day | A reserve stays in the bank |
| Weight and space | More stored energy in a smaller cabinet | Heavier for the same usable energy |
| A short winter day | Accepts charge while the sun is useful | Takes a slower charge |
| Care | Managed by the battery electronics (BMS — the electronics that keep the battery safe) | Sealed. Sitting flat shortens its life |
| Where it belongs | A full-time house, and most new stand-alone designs | A small bank that works occasionally |
Match the chemistry to the week
A full-time house that cycles every day is where lithium is the usual answer. AGM still belongs on a light, occasional load. Cold mornings and a long empty season are a different call again: sodium-ion, when that profile fits. The storage design around either chemistry is the off grid battery page.
The battery is one piece
Sized together
Chemistry follows the loads and the winter. The whole stack — panels included — is an off-grid system.
Keep it while it works
An older AGM bank can stay while the reserve is still useful. Replacing it is a drawing, not a reflex.
The box speaks to the pack
Managed lithium speaks to the inverter. A simple AGM bank is a different wiring job. What we install names the platforms after that is known.
When the profile fits
Frost, a long empty season, or the chemistry itself. Read sodium batteries before treating it as a default.
Where an install actually happens
We install where accredited installers are on the ground: Northern Rivers, Tweed, Gold Coast, Mid North Coast, and the South Australian towns on the areas page. Outside that map you get a straight answer, and we check whether a preferred partner can take the site on.

A custom design, drawn for this place
Tell us how the house uses power — full-time cycling, a small occasional load, or a cold site that sits empty. The design names the chemistry after that, lithium, AGM or sodium-ion.

Lithium and AGM questions
What is an AGM battery?
AGM means absorbent glass mat. The acid sits in a glass mat inside a sealed case. It is a lead-acid battery, the kind many older off-grid sheds still run. No watering. A reserve usually stays in the bank, so less of the nameplate is available each day than with lithium.
Is lithium the right chemistry for every off-grid house?
For a full-time house that cycles most days, lithium is the usual fit. A small bank that works occasionally — a weekender shed, a gate, a pump that runs now and then — can still be AGM. The property decides. We publish no ranking list.
Where does sodium-ion fit?
When cold mornings, a long empty season, or the chemistry itself decide it. Sodium-ion is a separate page. It is not a third column in a shopping comparison. The wider storage question, lithium or sodium, is on the off grid battery page.
Can an older AGM bank stay in service?
Often, while it still holds a useful reserve. A design that cycles it hard every day is where a lithium pack takes its place. That call is made on the drawing, before anyone orders a battery.
